yes i am working at a women's clothing store and this is my 1st job. i was wondering if anyone could tell me some things i could say to customers similar to but other than: "are you looking for something specific or just browsing?" or "can i give you a hand with anything or are you ok?". i'd like some creative but not off the wall things to say. the majority of my customers are elderly ladies by the way. if anyone knows of a website that also has tips etc. on it if you could leave me the link that'd be teriffic. any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!

God Doesn't Exist :
You could walk up to one of the customers as they are admiring a dress and say, "Ooww, I have been looking at this dress and thinking about buying it," or, "My mother likes dresses like this, etc." If you can come up with ways to include the merchandise into your personal life by telling stories it will break the ice and make time go by faster. I used to be a cashier at a supermarket and I always turned my job into an opportunity to practice socializing with strangers. Don't think of the customers as "customers," just think of them as human beings. If you only use all of the regular mechanical approaches (such as, "Can I assist you in any way?") you will come off sounding like a robot with no personality. Customers will not be offended by you trying to have a conversation with them. They like a sales associate who is personal and friendly.
Just don't lie to try to sell merchandise because the customers will know you are being dishonest and they will not appreciate it. For instance, when I was considering buying a Nissan Sentra once a used car salesman said, "The Nissan Sentra is a good car. My first car was a Nissan Sentra." I knew the guy was full of it and I wanted to walk off the lot right then and there.
