Customer Service question?
A male customer asked me what is a good customer service tip? I work at a high end restaurant and when you are asked a question like that you know it will be 15 percent. But, he was a real pain who returned 2 courses because he is the guy that hates everything…from onions to olive oil….I told him it is customary to tip 20 percent in a restaurant like this considering I had 2 of his courses remade to his specs.
What is a good tip now days? 10 percent 20 percent?

You did good. 15% is normal, but because of the extra work and aggravation he caused, 20% was not out of line.
I always leave 15 for adequate service, and 20 or 25 for good service. If someone just brings out my food and never shows up again until they bring the check, they're not really doing their job. Most servers go out of their way to make sure the customer is happy, and I know this, so I always try to make sure they get a little extra.

It really depends how the server is. I generally tip 15% as well, sometimes up to 30% if the server deserves it. A good tip is 20%

My husband and I go out to dinner every Saturday night. We don't have alot of money, but we always tip 20% if the service is good which it usually is. We remember when we were young and making just a couple dollars an hour and how we depended on the generosity of people's tips. I don't believe in tips being "shared" by ALL of the waiters and waitresses. Each one should be able to keep their own tips. They should be motivated to do good service in order to get good tips from customers who are appreciative.

As a server, my average tip is 10 - 12%. But, there are many that leave as much as 35-40%. At the end of the night, my average is 9-15% on a busy night. On slower nights average is near 30%.

Around here, it's basically at 15% but if i go to a fancy place, I tend to go for 20% because usually the people that work in places like that are a little more knowledgeable and tend to be more courteous.

Depends on the situation. If you are nice and very helpful and don't b!*ch to his face, then one should leave you somewhere in the lines of 20%. If I'm at a nice restaurant and the service was exceptional, I will tip more than that. My last time out to a "fancier" restaurant (Bravo! Cucina Italiana), our bill, with alcohol, was around $120.00… I left a $30 tip. 20% would have been $24. But the server was great and when I did send back my fish which wasn't cooked the way I thought it should have been, he didn't b!*ch. He seemed genuinely happy to make it right. I mean, if we're forking over $120 for a meal, it damn-well BETTER be cooked the way I want it.
Anyhow, standard tipping anymore is 10-20% with it averaging out to about 15%. Yes, everyone knows that servers make about two or three bucks an hour on average and the tips are what makes it worth while. But if you hate your job and are pissed cause someone sent something back that they paid GOOD money for, they will catch wind of it and it will affect your tip.
I always tip 20% because my mom was a server while I was growing up, so I know how it is to live off of tips… REALLY good tips. My mom NEVER came home with less than $200 in her pocket- ever.
Hope this helps.

I would say anywhere between 15 and 20. I tend to tip less–or not at all–if the service is crap and more if the service is excellent.
